AI SEO Services: What to Expect and How to Hire Well

AI SEO services help your business get found and cited where people now look for answers: Google Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. The work starts with proven search fundamentals (crawlable pages, useful content, accurate business information) and adds a layer built for answer-based search. For a Phoenix-area business, that means tying it all to Google Maps and local intent, then measuring leads, not just rankings.
This guide explains what an AI SEO agency actually does, what no honest agency can promise, how to measure results, and what to check before you sign a contract.
TL;DR
- AI SEO builds on traditional SEO. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same indexed content and fundamentals as regular search, with no special markup required.
- A good provider covers technical health, people-first content, structured data, Google Business Profile and review work, and measurement.
- Be wary of anyone who guarantees placement in AI answers or sells fake or incentivized reviews.
- Track AI traffic in Google Analytics 4 and judge success by qualified leads, calls and booked appointments.
- Pricing depends on scope, competition and how many locations you serve, so ask for a written scope tied to outcomes.

What AI SEO services are
AI SEO is the practice of making your content easy for AI-powered search tools to find, extract and trust. Search Engine Land describes it as adding a generative, answer-based layer on top of traditional search fundamentals. Traditional SEO aims at ranking positions on a results page. AI SEO aims at being the source an AI answer pulls from, and being named in it.
You will see the same work sold under several labels: AI search optimization, generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO). The labels differ more than the deliverables do. HubSpot’s overview frames GEO and AEO as building on the same foundations as ordinary SEO so that content is clear, extractable and trusted.
The term also gets used for a second thing: using AI tools to speed up SEO tasks like research or drafting. Both are legitimate. When you shop for services, ask which one the agency means, because the deliverables differ.
How AI SEO differs from traditional SEO
| Traditional SEO | AI SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank higher in results pages | Be cited or recommended inside AI answers |
| Unit of success | Position, clicks, sessions | Mentions, citations, referral traffic, leads |
| Content style | Pages targeting keywords | Clear, self-contained answers backed by evidence |
| Where it shows up | Google results, Maps | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity |
| Foundation | Crawlability, relevance, authority | The same, plus extractable structure and consistent entity information |
The practical takeaway: you do not replace SEO with AI SEO. A site that cannot be crawled or has thin pages will not be cited by anything. Google’s own guide to optimizing for generative AI features points to crawlability, indexing, internal links, good page experience, readable text and accurate structured data.
What an AI SEO agency does for a business
A solid engagement usually has five parts. Here is what each looks like for a local service business.
1. Technical foundation
The agency confirms that your important pages can be crawled and indexed, reviews JavaScript rendering and page speed, and fixes broken internal links. Google’s AI features documentation says there are no extra technical requirements and no special files needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. If a vendor sells you a secret file or proprietary markup for Google’s AI features, that is a red flag.
Older content matters here too. Pages that have drifted out of date or carry dead links weaken the site overall, and a routine review of auditing old blog posts is a good model for how to find and prioritize those fixes.
2. Crawler access for non-Google AI tools
ChatGPT search relies on its own crawler. OpenAI’s crawler documentation explains that OAI-SearchBot powers search results and that site owners control access through robots.txt. Blocking it means your content cannot be included in those summaries. An agency should check that your robots.txt is not blocking bots you want, and decide deliberately about the ones you do not.
3. People-first content
AI systems pull from pages that answer a question completely and credibly. That means original, useful content organized so a reader (and a machine) can find the answer fast: a clear question, a direct answer, then the detail. Google warns against creating pages for every query variation, and says that creating separate content mainly to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy. Thinking in terms of a balanced campaign content mix beats mass-producing near-duplicate pages.
If AI tools help draft anything, a responsible agency has a human fact-check the copy, metadata and structured data before publication. Google’s guidance on generative AI content cautions that generative models can produce inaccurate information.
4. Structured data
Structured data gives search engines explicit clues about what a page is. Google’s structured data introduction says markup should describe information that users can actually see on the page. For a local business, that typically means accurate business, service, FAQ and review details that match the visible content.
5. Google Business Profile, reviews and local signals
For Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa and Chandler businesses, local visibility often decides who gets the call. Google explains that Business Profile information is compiled from the business, public web content, third parties, users and Google’s own interactions, and is used in Search and Maps. So the work includes keeping your address, hours, services, photos and reviews accurate and consistent across the web.
What no agency can honestly promise
Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond SEO fundamentals. That means nobody can guarantee you a spot in an AI answer. What an agency can do is remove obstacles, strengthen the content and signals that AI systems draw on, and report what changes.
Reviews need the same care. The FTC’s 2023 guidance on deceptive reviews and endorsements addresses fake or manipulated reviews, incentivized reviews and undisclosed material connections. A legitimate provider helps you ask real customers for honest feedback and responds to all of it. It never fabricates reviews, hides negative ones or disguises paid endorsements.

How to measure AI search results
AI visibility can feel fuzzy, but several signals are concrete.
- GA4 AI traffic. Google Analytics now includes an AI Assistant channel that separates traffic from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude from organic search, as noted in Google’s Analytics release notes.
- ChatGPT referrals. ChatGPT adds the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter to links, according to OpenAI’s publisher FAQ, so you can filter those visits.
- Search Console. Google points to Search Console for measuring performance in Search, including pages that appear in AI features.
- Business outcomes. Calls, form fills, booked appointments and closed jobs, tracked with call tracking and a CRM. Traffic is a means; revenue is the point.
- Manual prompt checks. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask (“best HVAC repair in Mesa,” for example) and record whether you appear, month over month.
Ask any agency to show a sample report before you hire. If it only shows impressions and rankings, it is not measuring what you are paying for.
What affects the cost
Published figures vary widely, and we will not quote a market average we cannot source. What we can say is what moves the price:
- Scope. Technical SEO alone costs less than SEO plus content, Google Ads, web design and automation.
- Competition. Ranking for plumbing or legal terms in Phoenix is harder than a niche service.
- Locations. Each service area or office adds profile, page and review work.
- Site condition. A site with crawl or speed problems needs a heavier first phase.
- Contract term. Many agencies bill upfront for a set term, which is how we work.
Ask for a written scope that lists deliverables, reporting cadence and what happens at the end of the term.
Checklist: how to evaluate an AI SEO agency
- Do they start with technical and content fundamentals rather than tricks?
- Do they refuse to guarantee placement in AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Gemini?
- Is AI-assisted content reviewed by a human, with sources checked?
- Do they handle reviews ethically and in line with FTC guidance?
- Will they report on leads and revenue, not only traffic?
- Do they understand your local market, service areas and Google Maps?
- Can you see what they did each month, in plain language?
Our perspective
We see the same pattern with Arizona business owners: they hear that AI is replacing search and worry that everything they have invested in is obsolete. It is not. The businesses that get named by Google’s AI features and by assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini are, in our experience, the ones with fast, clear websites, accurate Google Business Profiles and a steady flow of genuine reviews.
That is why we treat AI search optimization as part of the same program as local and technical SEO, not a separate add-on. Our approach is built around measurable outcomes: more qualified leads, booked appointments and paying customers, with transparent reporting so you can see what is working.
Local businesses should not need an enterprise budget to compete with larger rivals. Automated review generation, AI customer engagement and SMS and email follow-ups help turn the attention you earn into customers, so the traffic is not wasted.

FAQ
Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?
It builds on it. Regular SEO targets rankings in results pages, while AI SEO also aims to make your content clear, extractable and trustworthy enough for AI tools to cite. Google says its AI features use the same fundamentals as search, so strong SEO remains the base.
Can an agency guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
No. Google states there are no special requirements or optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and the AI tools choose sources on their own. A reputable agency improves the content, technical health and local signals that make citation more likely, then measures the outcome.
How long does it take to see results?
It depends on your site’s starting condition, your competition and how quickly content and technical fixes can be published. Technical and Business Profile fixes are often visible sooner than authority and content gains. Ask for milestones in the agreement rather than a single promised date.
Do I need a different agency for Google Ads and SEO?
Not necessarily. Paid search and organic work share keyword research, landing pages and conversion tracking, so one team coordinating both can avoid duplicated effort. What matters is that reporting shows each channel’s leads separately.
